Chapter Thirteen
Celeste
"Celeste! Celeste?"
"Up here--and Piers, you sly dog, that new face really suits you, doesn't it?"
Piers shot up looking completely confused but ready to fight while it took my brain a moment to realize I wasn't dreaming.
Gillian and Jameson were waking us up, and Variel came up the stairs behind them, looking almost like a proud father who had just given birth to two full-grown children.
"I found my old servants indeed, and they insisted on coming along to help us, for old time's sake. Except I forbade Uram from coming because I know you dislike him."
"I'm so happy to see you!" I cried, hugging the two of them, once I had manifested some clothes on. They looked older, of course, but also very contented and grown into themselves. "You're going to help us fight?"
"Oh no," Jameson said, waving his hands. "No fighting. We still have kids at home and we left them with Lord Orson and Lady Daisy. Great fun for them for a few days, but they'll be exhausted after that."
"Anyway, we don't know to fight," Gillian said.
"I'm sure I could wield a sword admirably if pressed into service," Jameson said.
"Dear, fighting on stage is not real," Gillian said, and I smiled, seeing a level of practicality in her that didn't used to be there. "No, we thought we could at least help with any cooking or carrying things you might need...really, anything outside of actual fighting. Delivering messages, etcetera."
"Yes, why don't you check on Miss Faustina and see if Doriana has any word?" Variel said, all too quick to start handing out tasks.
"Variel! Let's at least have some breakfast first," I said. "I'm sure Miss Faustina will tell us the second she knows anything and rushing her won't do any good. I'll whip up some pecan scones."
"I have missed you and that fine cooking," Jameson said. "I can hardly believe you're really still alive. We actually sailed out to that awful island to pay our respects to your immortal souls."
"That's so nice of you," I said.
"Maybe you could all go downstairs so I could get dressed?" Piers said, a little grumpily.
"I see the avornax is still grumpy," Gillian giggled.
"Don't you dare remind me of that," Piers growled.
"I don't think he's a morning person," I said, leading them back downstairs.
"Where's Bevan?" Gillian asked. "Is he all right?" She saw how all the color must have drained from my face and said, "Oh."
"He's been captured and injured. I don't really know what happened. There was some huge commotion there and it just stopped, and...Madame Bianca threw his severed hand at us, just to show that he was defeated."
"Are you sure it was his hand?" Gillian asked.
"I should think I know Bevan's hands!" I swallowed. "I know every inch of them."
"You would know my hands, wouldn't you?" Jameson asked.
"I don't think I've ever paid attention to anyone's hands," Gillian said, shrugging.
"And after I dreamed of hands for all that time," grumbled her harpy-turned-man husband.
I had led them out the back door
